Guidance Counselor: Jackie Garcia
About Our Counselor: Ms. Garcia is a new employee at Northwest this year, and has come to us from Sky View Middle School. She is bilingual bicultural, and has been working for the Leominster Public Schools since 1998. She was an employee at Southeast School until 2003, and then was at Sky View until 2006.
Guidance Service Provision:
Classroom Component:
New this year will be our Guidance Counselor doing lessons in each classroom during four half hour sessions. Topics will be related to the types of issues and needs we have determined to be most beneficial to our student population.
• Positive Character - Focus on the key character traits we look for and expect from our
students, self-esteem and responsibility.
• Getting Along with Others – Focus will be on bullying, friendship and getting along with others.
• Problem Solving Quickly and Easily – Focus will be on conflict resolution strategies and anger
management.
• Safety – Focus will be on playground safety, safety in and around our building and stranger
danger.
Other Services:
• Teaching students about the consequences of their behavior inclusive of helping them explore
alternative behaviors and facilitating change.
• Referring students and parents to community agencies such as family services, mental health
and medical services.
• Guiding parents in understanding how to help their children achieve their fullest academic,
social and emotional potential.
• Providing an explanation of test results to assist teachers, parents and students in
understanding the information to achieve optimal learning experiences for students.
• Reviewing student specific curriculum and recommending the necessary changes to
appropriately match up programming, and services to best meet student needs.
