Northwest - Library

Curriculum:
The Northwest School Library Media Curriculum is a literature and technology-based program. Students learn about a variety of children’s authors and genres based upon the Massachusetts English Language Arts Frameworks. Students also receive instruction with computer programs and keyboarding based upon the Massachusetts Technology Curriculum Frameworks. Some of the areas covered are:

Grade 1: Folktales, fairytales, poetry, parts of a book, locating books in the library, book chats, fiction/non-fiction and the card catalog. Microsoft Word, search engines and keyboarding are introduced.

Grade 2: Card catalog usage, reference materials, research skills, book chats, genres, Internet usage through the Leominster Schools’ website, Microsoft Word and book location in the library are taught in 2nd grade.

Grade 3: Mastery of the online card catalog, introduction to the “BIG 6” research technique, Internet search, literature discussions, biographies, Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Publisher, and keyboarding activities are part of the third grade curriculum.

Grade 4: Literature analysis, Internet search, mastery of the “Big 6” research technique, and an introduction to Microsoft Office programs such as: PowerPoint and Excel.
