Northwest - Special Subjects

ART Special Subject
Teacher: Mrs. Cathy Dickinson

I am excited to be your child’s art teacher, and have many interesting projects planned for grades one during the school year. I hope the children find them stimulating and creative. I will be incorporating the Massachusetts Arts Curriculum Frameworks into all art lessons. The Standards I will focus on include:
• Methods, Materials, and Techniques- Students will use a variety of materials, such as crayons, chalk, paint, clay, papers, and textiles. They will create artwork in a variety of two-dimensional and three-dimensional media. The students will learn and use appropriate vocabulary, take care of art materials and use them safely.
• Elements and Principals of Design- Students will explore and experiment with the use of color, line, texture, shape and form, pattern, symmetry, space and composition.
• Observation, Abstraction, Invention, and Expression- Students will create artwork from direct observations, memory and imagination. They will experiment with realistic and abstract renderings.
• Drafting, Revising, and Exhibiting- Students will learn to discuss with others how and why their artwork was created. They will also select works for exhibit.
• Critical Response- Students will describe and analyze their own work and the work of others using appropriate visual vocabulary.

Interdisciplinary art lessons will be introduced that are integrated with math, science, social studies and literature on a regular basis. I will also incorporate multiculturalism within the arts during the school year.

I look forward to working with the students at Northwest School!

Math Lab Special Subject
Teacher: Mrs. Karen Fortin

Each class comes to Math Lab Special for one forty minute period a week. The main instructional focus is to develop measurement skills through systematic instruction and engaging measurement activities involving an array of manipulatives. I Measure Works is the program being utilized, which provides a complete, hands-on curriculum. Topics include time, length, area/perimeter, volume/capacity, weight, temperature, and angles in geometric shapes. In addition to measurement, we other activities are inclusive of calculations, problem solving, and geometry. In my class “Math is Special.” I love math and I hope to pass on this enthusiasm to the students.

Music – Special Subject

Teachers: Mr. Arthur Pierce and Mrs. Ruthie Lew

Both music teachers work diligently to make the music room an exciting place to be for the students. The walls are covered with pictures of musicians, instruments, the musical scale and age appropriate musical vocabulary. The room also contains a wonderfully large assortment of Orff and percussion instruments.

Songs, movement and instruments are all central to classoom musical instruction. Our first graders learn to use their voices and keep a steady beat. Second graders begin partner songs, recognizing note patterns and musical symbols. In third grade, we explore instrumental families, composers, detailed choreography and performing on pitched instruments. Our fourth graders are introduced to time signatures, music math, recorders and Broadway.

Most grade levels are involved in a major performance during the school year. They learn lines, choreography, stage presence, audience etiquette, teamwork, and experience the whole wonderful process of seeing a show develop from conception to ovation.
