United Way Day
Johnny Appleseed students participated in the United Way Day of Caring through collecting canned goods.

Friday BBQ
On Friday, June 12, 2009, the 5th grade classes went to the Eagles’ Hall for a BBQ. The day started out gray and raining but the skies cleared and we played wiffle ball, football, hit-away, four-square, and board games. Kids also sang karaoke. We had bean-bag toss, bowling, ping pong, and face painting. For lunch, we had hotdogs, hamburgers, or cheeseburgers donated by Applebee’s. We even had ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery. Everyone had a great time. Thank you so much, PTO, for organizing such a fun day for us.

Grade 5 Inventions at JA!
Miss Brooks and Mrs. Barnaby’s classes participated in an invention challenge. The students were asked to develop a piece of technology that would solve a problem to make lives better. Inventions also needed to show a transfer of energy. Both classes had wonderful ideas including devices for the disabled, devices for pets, and devices that just made work fun!

Music Performance
On Thursday April 30th the Johnny Appleseed School Band and Chorus presented a Solo/Ensemble concert for the fourth grade students.  The event showcased the individual talents of the students involved in these programs.  The students also presented song as a collective unit.  Two students performed on the piano as well.

Picnic Lunch
5A had the chance to have a picnic lunch because of the good efforts of one of our classmates. Shyanne  had her name picked from the A.P.P.L.E.S. basket, and she chose a class picnic for her prize. The weather was beautiful, and we all had a very pleasant lunch. Thanks, Shyanne!

Touring Old Sturbridge Village
Here we the 3rd grade are touring Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. The weather was perfect for exploring all the exhibits.
Our favorite exhibits were The Barn where we got to milk a cow; the Governor’s House with the beautiful gardens, the old school house where the teacher was allowed to use a switch on children who did not follow the rules; the bulls in the pasture, and of course, lunch under the canopy with friends.

Special Memorial Day Program
On Thursday May 21st the second grade students and the Developmental 1 class presented a special Memorial Day Program to the school and invited guests.  The show “Let’s Sing, America” included songs and dialogue.  Parents and veterans attended the program.   The twenty veterans that attended were presented with a Johnny Appleseed mug.

Mrs. Joslyn ’s class picnic
Mrs. Joslyn ’s students had a class picnic on a beautiful sunny day because one of the students in the class had his Apple card chosen. He was able to choose from many prizes but the class picnic was his choice. The student’s in Mrs. Joslyn’s class had a fantastic time.

Miss Bagley’s class picnic
Miss Bagley’s class was lucky enough to be able to have a picnic outside at school.  It was a bright, sunny day and 2A got to enjoy a little fun in the sun.  We got to eat our lunches on the picnic tables and get some fresh air. Dr. O’Hearn-Curran, Mr. Burns, and Mrs. King even dropped by to eat their lunch.  What an awesome time! Thanks Antony! (Antony chose the picnic for 2A.)

The Johnny Appleseed Lawn party was held on May 16th, 2009 on the grounds of Johnny Appleseed School. As usual, there were many volunteers from the school community. Members of the PTO were busy throughout the day setting up and supervising a variety of fun activities for children.  The State Police K9 unit offered a live demonstration for families. Other activities included the Blue Dog Group, Davis’ Farm Land (petting zoo) and pony rides, a moonwalk, obstacle courses, games, crafts and lots of fun food. We would like to send a big thank you to everyone who helped out this year. It does take a village to get the lawn party off the ground and running!
