Making Bats in Miss Robichaud’s kindergarten class

Miss Robichaud’s kindergarten class had the opportunity to have a special guest come to teach the class an art lesson during the month of October.  Mandy Roberge, mother of Sage Roberge one of the students in the class, came to teach the children how to make bats out of recyclable materials.  The children learned that they can reuse different materials to create projects and by using part of an egg carton, a Popsicle stick, a button, paper wings, and wiggly eyes they all made their own unique bats.  The children were very proud of their projects and enjoyed the opportunity to have a special art lesson.

At the end of the art lesson, the Assistant Principal, Ms. Kostka came to the room and read the children a book on bat facts where they learned that bats are the only mammals that fly among other important bat facts!

The children are excited for the return of Mrs. Roberge next month for another lesson and we are fortunate to have this community connection!

Grade 3 at Northwest – Pilgrim/Wampanoag visit

At the end of September, the third graders welcomed special visitors from Plymouth Plantation. Sir Issac Allerton was one of the visitors who spoke about colonial life during the 1620s. He shared colonial artifacts with the students, and even let the children try on Pilgrim clothing! Another visitor from Plymouth Plantation spoke to the students about the Wampanoags and their life. Students were able to see a slide show of Wampanoag homes and important artifacts. The visitor also brought a bow and some animal furs to pass around! The students were also given time to ask questions to help support their learning of the Pilgrims and Wampanoags during Social Studies class.
