To the Parents of entering Kindergarten through Grade 12 students,
During the summer months, it is crucial that children continue to read daily to sustain their academic skills. Studies have indicated that students who read during the summer can actually improve their reading skills. It is important that students are encouraged to read and understand books that are suitable to their level of comprehension. This year the Literacy Team along with teachers and parents have updated the program and have identified required reading selections by reading level (Level 1, 2 & 3 represent easy, average & challenging) as well as a variety of books in different genres in order to accommodate children’s various interests. Students entering Kindergarten and Grade 1 may not be able to read the selections independently. You are encouraged to read the selections to or with your child.
The school year will begin with activities and discussions related to the theme of the required summer reading book. During the month of September, students will be assessed on what they read and the results of this assessment will be included in their first term grade. In addition to the required book, students are asked to read two additional books from a choice list. The goal of the summer reading program is to foster a love of reading.
Have an enjoyable summer and happy reading!
